My name is Kristy Wilson from Orange County, CA. I was diagnosed with stage 1 Ovarian Cancer while I was 20 weeks pregnant. The cancer was found during my first ultrasound for my 3rd child, Tyler. My husband and I already had a 7 month old daughter and a 2 1/2 year old son and were not necessarily ready to be pregnant again yet. However, God had a much bigger plan for us and our angel, Tyler. The doctors were shocked to find ovarian cancer in me, being only 31 years old, having no family history, and to find it at only stage 1. Tyler literally saved my life.
At 21 weeks pregnant I had surgery to remove the tumor and my right ovary. Unless you have been through it, I cannot describe the worry that goes through a mothers mind as you have surgery so close to your little helpless baby in the womb.
I had to then wait 7 months to see if the cancer had spread. It was a time full of anxiety and anticipation, not only for my health, but for the health of my baby. My faith, husband, kids, family, and friends were amazing pillars of support for me. Tyler was born healthy and happy on 11/1/11! I cannot explain the overwhelming sense of relief and happiness I felt as my miracle came into this world completely healthy and absolutely gorgeous! He has added so much joy to our family and is an incredibly sweet spirit.
5 weeks after his delivery, I underwent a complete hysterectomy and the results came back great! The cancer was confined to the ovary that was already removed and it had not spread.
Being a cancer survivor is something I thought I would never be, but I am a survivor thanks to the plan God had for my son, Tyler. Women are strong to begin with, but cancer does not stand a chance next to a woman diagnosed with cancer while pregnant. That woman will do whatever it takes to care for her helpless, unborn, miracle child.
I had genetic testing done last year and by the grace of God, I did not have the gene. I am now, however thinking ahead to when my daughter has to worry about this disease. It shocks me that there is no reliable, routine test available for ovarian cancer and I pray each day that by the time my 3 year old daughter needs to start thinking about this horrible disease, there will be much better testing available. Awareness is key!
Our family is now complete and I am healthy (and being monitored)! I feel stronger now and hope my story helps other women going through the same thing.
